P.I. denies asking cop to drop charges

edmontonsun.com - Alberta - P.I. denies asking cop to drop charges: "A trial began yesterday for a former city drug cop turned private investigator charged with obstruction of justice and extortion in a case involving a police informant.

Police allege Ross Barros, 54, tried to get cops to withdraw charges against an alleged drug dealer in exchange for Barros not revealing who the confidential source was.

As well, police allege Barros committed extortion by getting a group of alleged gangsters together and inducing them to provide personal information, including cell phone numbers, in order to identify the informant.

Barros is claiming he simply tried to inform the police they needed to change their system because it was easy to access phone records and track down informers.

Court heard the charges stem from a May 6, 2005, meeting between Barros and Sgt. Kevin Brezinski, then a detective with the Integrated Response Organized Crime unit. "
