Woman arrested for life insurance fraud

NBC2 News Online - Woman arrested for life insurance fraud: "A Punta Gorda woman turned herself in on Friday to face insurance fraud charges and her arrest ended a two year investigation.

Authorities say Gloria Davis Anderson, 57, claimed to be the beneficiary of her broth-in-law's life insurance policy - when the money was actually supposed to go to her daughter-in-law, Tammy Carter.

Perry Anderson originally named Gloria's husband, his brother, as the beneficiary of his $25,000 life insurance policy. But he later changed it to his daughter, Carter.

When Perry died, Gloria told investigators she 'hatched up a little scheme.' She sent correspondence to the insurance company, AFLAC, stating that she was Tammy Carter in order to get the money."

School for deaf and blind allowed felons to work on campus

School for deaf and blind allowed felons to work on campus - CNN.com: "The Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind allowed felons to work on campus construction jobs during the past two years, according to interviews and documents.

Many of the workers were allowed on campus even though they had failed background checks, school employees complained.

The felons included a man convicted of domestic battery and selling cocaine; a man convicted of aggravated assault; and a man convicted of offenses including trafficking in hallucinogens, battery on his spouse and domestic violence, The St. Augustine Record reported Sunday.

Current and former staff members started complaining to school and state officials about nine months ago, saying school officials didn't show concern for student safety, the newspaper said.

School president Elmer Dillingham said he believes the administration made acceptable decisions. He said the felons were supervised by a full-time off-duty police officer and only hired because the school could not find a felon-free construction crew to work on emergency construction projects.

'I don't think, if you go to any public school in this state, that you'll find a better security system,' he said."

Googling your date

Googling your date - CNN.com: "Dating used to be largely a matter of spending time with a love interest, discovering the good, the bad and the ugly in person. If you were lucky, friends helped fill in some of the blanks.

These days, the Internet -- and the ability to check people out before they ever meet up -- has forever changed the rules.

For better or worse, 'googling' your date has become standard practice.

'I often tell my friends that are still in the dating sphere to use the power of Google to their advantage,' says Katie Laird, a 24-year-old Web marketing professional and self-proclaimed 'social software geek' from Houston.

The results can be enlightening, surprising -- and sometimes, a little disturbing. So Laird's advice also comes with a warning: 'Don't google what you can't handle.'

Hers is the voice of experience. In her dating life, she regularly did online research on her dates and turned up, among other things, 'bizarre' fetishes and a guy who was fascinated with vampires."

Gophers consider background checks for recruits

SI.com - NCAA Football - Gophers consider background checks for recruits - Wednesday April 11, 2007 1:42PM: "Criminal background checks may one day be part of the recruiting process for freshman athletes at the University of Minnesota after the school signed a football player who had been charged in two armed robberies in the St. Louis area.

'It's something we've debated,' said Gophers athletic director Joel Maturi. 'I think people are leaning toward going down that path. But I'm a little nervous because we have a situation where we didn't find anything.'"

Men vs. woman on gossip, cheating and more

Men vs. woman on gossip, cheating and more - TODAY: Relationships - MSNBC.com: "Are men born to cheat? Do women prefer lavish dinners rather than just kicking back? Marnie Hanel of Tango magazine and Jordan Burchette of Maxim.com go head-to-head to debate myths about the opposite sex.

Men are more likely to cheat.
Tango says: We’re not about to play innocent when it comes to infidelity, but we’re also not going to stand in the way of science. All the research points in the same direction: men are marginally more likely to succumb to temptation than women are. Maybe this is because men seem to get away with cheating (see: Charlie Sheen, Jack Nicholson, Jude Law), and women seem to be publicly humiliated for it (see: Hester Prynne, Anna Nicole Smith.) Although we’re not any less likely to dream up fantasies involving the hot new cubicle-mate and an empty office, but we are less likely to indulge them. That said, when the going gets tough, women will spill their secrets, problems, and concerns to another man. It may not have the sizzle of a passionate affair, but emotional infidelity can also burn a relationship."

Feds search Bridgewater Place office

WOODTV.com & WOOD TV8 - Grand Rapids news, weather, sports and video - Feds search Bridgewater Place office: "FBI and IRS officials served a search warrant Thursday morning at an office inside Bridgewater Place in Grand Rapids.

24 Hour News 8 received a tip that a raid was in progress at a security firm called Redline 22 LLC. People on the scene told us about 30 federal authorities have been seen scouring the building. We saw evidence being labeled and boxes taken out of the building.

Details were initially slow to come in, but 24 Hour News 8 made phone calls and pulled court documents. We traced the owner of the company to Michael Vorce, a man who has a long paper trail. We tried to contact Vorce but to no avail."

Nursing home worker arrested over alleged threats to abuse witness

Nursing home worker arrested over alleged threats to abuse witness: "An Ottawa nursing home worker faces charges after he allegedly threatened a witness who reported elder abuse at the residence.

Nelson Viegas, 43, was arrested Wednesday and faces various charges related to obstructing justice by intimidating a witness, said an Ottawa police news release issued late Wednesday afternoon.

Police said a staff member at the south-end home came forward with reports that another worker was physically assaulting the elderly residents.

Viegas allegedly threatened the witness with violence, and has also been charged with what police describe as a minor assault on the witness."

Complaint filed over city investigator license

Hernando Today - Online Edition: "A local businesswoman has filed complaints with the state, contending the city should have hired a licensed investigator to probe allegations that have flown between the police chief and human resources director.

Anna Liisa Covell, co-owner of Covell Electric in Brooks-ville, said she mailed the complaints Saturday to the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. She also provided a copy to Hernando Today.

Covell filed two separate complaints. One is against the city and interim city manager Stephen Baumgartner for hiring James Farley to conduct the investigation. The other is against Farley himself."

Computers Expedite Employee Screenings

Computers Expedite Employee Screenings - washingtonpost.com: "Maryland businesses and government agencies seeking the criminal histories of prospective employees are getting speedier results from new state efforts to move background checks from a paper system into the digital age.

New computer software operated by the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services has cut the wait times for background check results from three months to an average of two weeks, state officials said.

That's a big help to employers who regularly check for criminal records of job applicants. Maryland law requires criminal background checks for prospective police, teachers, nurses, child-care workers and some jobs that require access to private homes, such as heating and air-conditioning work, said Rosa Cruz, a spokeswoman for the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services."

Son Gets Probation For Elder Abuse

Son Gets Probation For Elder Abuse: "A Dunn man received a suspended sentence yesterday for assaulting his 89-year-old mother in her home.

Robert Roscoe Sandlin, 51, was charged June 9, 2006, on felony counts of assault on a disabled elderly person and abusive and rageful language to the elderly and disabled.

The Dunn Police report said Mr. Sandlin hit his mother on the left side of the face with his hand in her 109 N. McKay St. home.

Detective Scott Epperson said information on the abuse was provided to the department by a third party.

Mr. Sandlin was uncooperative with Social Services and went to the coast during the investigation, Detective Epperson said, but was ultimately arrested at his home."

Boy's death haunts former protective services supervisor

Boy's death haunts former protective services supervisor | Inland News | PE.com | Southern California News | News for Inland Southern California: "The violent death of toddler Michael 'Mikey' Vallejo-Seiber nearly two years ago still haunts former Riverside County Child Protective Services supervisor Scott Chase.

In August 2005, Chase supervised the CPS emergency response units that fielded the call from the 3-year-old's pediatrician reporting suspected abuse.

'I keep on playing it over in my mind,' he said. 'I had the (Vallejo-Seiber) file in front of me. Why couldn't there have been more information in there? Was there more I could have done? Was there a way we could have saved the kid?'

Chase is a 20-year Navy veteran and received some of his social work training while in the Navy. He worked as a drug and alcohol prevention coordinator and a sexual assault victim advocate.

He received a bachelor's degree in human services from Wayland Baptist University in Hawaii."

Lawyers, chiropractors named in auto fraud investigation

EagleTribune.com, North Andover, MA - Lawyers, chiropractors named in auto fraud investigation: "Two local medical clinics and two local law firms have been named in the latest grand jury investigation into auto-insurance scams.

Named in court documents are Kaplan Chiropractic of Lawrence and Haverhill Family Chiropractic of Haverhill, as well as Lawrence lawyer Socrates De La Cruz and the Andover law office of Berger & Hyde. An accompanying police report states two men staged phony crashes and 'brought the majority of their bogus victims' to these four businesses.

Repeated calls over the last two days to these four offices were not returned for comment.

This is the second grand jury to focus on auto fraud in the Merrimack Valley, a cottage industry of crime where middlemen known as 'runners' get paid to steer accident victims to lawyers and chiropractors for cash.

The four businesses are not the subjects of this new grand jury, convened only a few weeks ago. The focus of the probe is on two alleged runners - Christopher Ortega, 28, formerly of Lawrence, and Leo M. Lopez, 26, a former Haverhill resident. The court documents described the men as 'major runners.'"

Elderly Woman Arrested on Theft, Forgery, Fraud Charges

Elderly Woman Arrested on Theft, Forgery, Fraud Charges: "A woman accused three times of murder in the past 30 years has been arrested on suspicion of theft, forgery, fraud and computer tampering, authorities said.

Marjorie Congdon Hagen, 74, was taken into custody Thursday night at a Tucson assisted-living home and was booked into the Pima County jail on a $250,000 bond.

Tucson police declined Friday to discuss what led to the charges, citing the ongoing investigation.

Hagen was arrested in 1977 in connection with the slaying of her mother and her mother's nurse in Duluth, Minn., according to court records.

She was acquitted but was arrested again in 1984 when she burned down her house in Mound, Minn. She was convicted of arson and insurance fraud and sentenced to 21 months in prison.

In 1990, Hagen and her husband moved to Ajo, Ariz. One year later, authorities said Marjorie Hagen used a kerosene-soaked rag to try to burn down a neighbor's home. She was convicted of attempted arson, and the judge allowed her to go home before reporting to prison to make arrangements for her 84-year-old husband.

The day after she was convicted, Wally Hagen was found dead of a pill overdose."

Investigation News - Check background of potential partner

Investigation News - Check background of potential partner - PInow.com Investigator Directory: "The day may come when running background checks on a roommate or romantic partner will be as common as getting an annual physical.

Several private investigators in Seattle — reflecting on two recent cases in which women were killed by romantic partners who turned out to be disguising shady pasts — find it difficult to believe that such searches aren’t common practice already."

Texas investigator questions extended sentences for young inmates; families allege retaliation

Texas investigator questions extended sentences for young inmates; families allege retaliation | www.azstarnet.com ®: "The records of most inmates in Texas' scandal-rocked juvenile prison system will be reviewed to determine whether their sentences were unfairly extended, an official investigating the system said Friday.

Time has been added to the sentences of about 90 percent of Texas Youth Commission inmates, commission special master Jay Kimbrough said. Inmates' families and advocates claim that prison officials often extended sentences for capricious reasons or in retaliation for filing grievances.

'I have no confidence in the integrity of that entire system,' Kimbrough said as he announced the probe Friday.

A panel of community activists, prosecutors and juvenile prison officials will review the records on each inmate's sentencing extension and make a suggestions to a retired judge who will decide whether the inmate should be immediately released, Kimbrough said."

Online dating bill squashed in Illinois House

Online dating bill squashed in Illinois House: "'Don't you have an expectation when you pay $30 to find true love that it won't turn out to be a sex offender?' asked Democratic Rep. John Bradley, according to STLToday, during a hearing in Illinois for the Internet Disclosure and Safety Awareness Act. The Illinois House Judiciary Committee shot down the bill (HB 563) this week which was introduced in February by Bradley. It would have required online dating sites offering services to citizens of the state to disclose whether or not they perform background checks on their members, and aimed to provide a feeling of safety among those users, armed with the knowledge that the other members were not criminals or sex offenders."

Three charged with insurance fraud

KTBS :: View News: "Three Shreveport men have been arrested by State Police on charges they lied about being in a car accident in order to get money from an insurance company.

State Police didn't charge a fourth man -- he's already jailed in Ouachita Parish awaiting trial on charges he killed three people last year in a car crash.

Jeomalyeous Thomas, 24, Eric Mayberry, 29, and Larry Henson, 27, face charges of insurance fraud.

Those men acted in conjunction with Jatazz Warren, 22, of Shreveport, State Police said. Warren is awaiting trial in Monroe on second-degree murder charges in connection with the fatal wreck, which police said occurred after he became enraged during an argument with his girlfriend."

Wedding Bell Blues

Wedding Bell Blues: "Infidelity is a touchy subject for any relationship, but generally isn't a reason to call the police upon learning of the 'other' person in a spouse's life.

It's a whole other matter, however, if the spouse decides to marry someone else without benefit of a divorce first. Then it's bigamy, a third-degree felony.

Police were alerted of just such an instance in Sulphur Springs Wednesday afternoon.

The report claims that a 32-year-old Sulphur Springs man married a local woman late last year, despite the fact that he was still married to a Lubbock woman. The man reportedly married the Lubbock woman in July of 2006, and the pair has lived apart for most of that time. He apparently married another woman in Hopkins County in late 2006 without benefit of a divorce."

Missing persons case turns into homicide investigation

news80: "The case of a missing person in Villa Park has now been classified as a homicide investigation after the resident was reportedly found dead in the garage of her Villa Park home.

As of press time Tuesday, March 20, no official charges had been made and no suspects had been publically identified by the Villa Park Police Department.

'I can't comment on what is taking place,' said Paul Darrah, communications manager for the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office. 'This case has now come from a missing persons investigation to a homicide investigation.'

Rebecca Klein, 32, was first reported missing on Friday, March 16, when her roommate reported her missing to Villa Park police officers."

Alexander to hire investigator to look into grievances

Alexander to hire investigator to look into grievances: "An official of the private company that runs the state's Alexander youth lockup says the company will hire a private investigator to look at complaints filed by the juvenile inmates.
John Morgenthau, chief operating officer of G-Four-S Youth Services, said the company is now in an assessment phase, evaluating its staff and practices. Morgenthau appeared this morning before the House Committee on Aging, Children and Youth, Legislative and Military Affairs.

He told the lawmakers that he expected the company would discover some practices that will be offensive. He said G-Four-S will investigate every incident and grievance filed by the youths, even if someone complains that his mashed potatoes were cold.

The Alexander Juvenile Correction Facility has repeatedly been criticized for ignoring complaints from youths. An advocacy group said earlier this week that a 14-year-old suffered a broken arm from an employee and that staff ignored the boy's complaints."
