Landlords Checking For Meth

Newschannel 3 | Landlords Checking For Meth: "Finding out who is a meth offender in Minnesota is as easy as a click on your computer. And some Albert Lea landlords say they are using it as a part of their routine background check on prospective tenants.

Last month the state unveiled a new online methamphetamine offender registry. You can search by first and last name and by county. Landlords check credit history and criminal background and residents say the meth check will help to keep their homes safer.

“It’s a good thing. Personally I don’t like to be around that stuff. I don’t like the lifestyle that really goes with it, “says apartment resident Stephen Sumner.

Landlords say in addition to safety, the online database will save them thousands of dollars. One landlord said if a resident has a meth lab in the building, everything from the carpeting to the walls would have to be removed and replaced with new items. She said that expense could cost her more than $2,000."
