Former investigator in trial hospitalized

Northwest Herald - Former investigator in trial hospitalized: "Instead of taking the witness stand, one of the men suing former State’s Attorney Meg Gorecki over their firing was hospitalized Wednesday.

Former state’s attorney investigator Phillip Carlson was absent from court during the trial’s sixth day after being taken to Delnor-Community Hospital. He later was transferred to another hospital for treatment of an unspecified medical condition. Carlson has had two strokes, according to testimony.

If he is unable to testify, attorneys could agree to submit to the jury testimony from an earlier deposition.

Although Carlson did not appear, the case moved on with the opening of Gorecki’s defense. The jury could begin deliberations as early as today.

Carlson and Thomas R. Smith filed the wrongful-termination lawsuit in 2001 against Gorecki, saying she fired them because they supported her opponents and spoke out against her during the 2000 election. She defeated incumbent David Akemann in the primary; she then won a race against Democrat Robert Steffen to become state’s attorney."
